Original DOS 2.0 specification allowed only 4 partitions per disc, but DOS 3.2 introduced concept of "extended partitions", which work as nested extra "boot records" which are pointed to by original ("primary") partitions in MBR. A master boot record is a special type of boot sector at the very beginning of partitioned computer mass storage devices like fixed disks or removable drives intended for use with IBM PC-compatible systems and beyond. A Master Boot Record ( MBR) is a special type of boot sector which is located at the beginning of the partitioned computer storage devices such as internal hard disks, external hard disks, removable drives, and more. This table is stored in the end of the boot sector (first sector) of the drive, after the bootstrap code. The BIOS program evaluates the first sector by checking if it contains the end signature. ![]() MBR consists of a main boot code, a partition table, and an end signature. ![]() Meta : id : mbr_partition_table title : MBR (Master Boot Record) partition table xref : forensicswiki : Master_boot_record wikidata : Q624752 tags : - dos license : CC0-1.0 endian : le doc : | MBR (Master Boot Record) partition table is a traditional way of MS-DOS to partition larger hard disc drives into distinct partitions. Master Boot Record (MBR), is the first sector of a hard disk and determines the location of the operating system (OS) to complete the execution of the booting process.
